Madison therapist; fellow traveler
About
Welcome!
I’m Katie Geiser, LPC (she/her) and I am a therapist in Madison, Wisconsin. I am trained in EMDR and I specialize in helping people heal from trauma, anxiety, and pregnancy or postpartum related mental health concerns. My clients tell me they appreciate my nonjudgmental, calm, easy to talk to demeanor. I am sometimes funny, sometimes sarcastic, and always gentle in our work together. I am also really really passionate about helping you through the difficulties you are facing.
Currently, I am utilizing online therapy which means I can meet with you as long as you are located anywhere in the state of Wisconsin.
What is therapy like?
Sometimes life experiences can leave lasting effects, but it doesn’t mean you need to move through it alone. Irvin Yalom, an existential psychiatrist, describes the relationship between client and therapist as “fellow travelers.” I believe this beautifully describes the uniqueness of therapy- that a therapeutic relationship and being together to move through life’s hardships can help create meaningful growth and change.
Madison Mental Health Services
To begin with, I am a Madison area therapist providing trauma therapy and mental health counseling to adults who are struggling in their lives. I am an EMDR therapist that specializes in trauma therapy, pregnancy and postpartum related mental health issues, and those who are feeling held back by their anxiety or substance use.
Secondly, it is my priority to create and hold space for you to be free to share your inner most experiences. It’s an honor to be with you, to hear you- to be a fellow traveler. Finding a therapist can be an incredibly vulnerable experience. I see you. You don’t have to go through this alone.
Finally, we can work together to find your inner strength and create hope for your future. Between EMDR therapy and more traditional talk therapy, I am confident that we can find solutions together. Whether you are looking to move beyond your past, stop worrying about your future, or feel better in the present- there is hope for you.

Therapy approach
It is my priority to work with you and help you get the most out of your therapy. I have a collaborative approach that will be tailored to meet your specific needs. As a therapist, I recognize that everyone is unique and there is no “one size fits all” in therapy. My approach also takes into account systemic factors that can influence mental health and multicultural considerations. Furthermore, I utilize a person-centered approach. This means that I fully believe that every person strives for and has the capacity to fulfill their own potential. I also implement a positive psychotherapy strength-based approach. This focuses on your internal strengths and resourcefulness as opposed to weaknesses, shortcomings, or failures.
Furthermore, I utilize a trauma informed approach which is crucial in being a trauma therapist. This means I understand and recognizing the nature of trauma. As well as, how it impacts a persons outlook, emotions, and behaviors. This understanding includes hope and is where change can begin.

Certifications and Trainings
In therapy, I utilize Evidenced Based Practices (EBPs). Research has proven that EBPs are effective at treating mental health related issues. My therapy approach uses EMDR, CBT, DBT, and Mindfulness to help facilitate change. If you would like to learn more about EMDR, then please click here.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
CBT is a type of talk therapy treatment that examines your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations, and behavior/actions. This approach believes that all of these are interconnected. In brief, this approach helps reduce overwhelming problems into smaller more manageable parts. This is joined with developing personal coping strategies aimed at creating solutions to current issues.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the state of being aware of the present moment with a nonjudgemental attitude. Easier said than done, right? Mindfulness is a therapeutic technique that helps gain further insight through observing your own mind and develop approaching yourself with warmth and kindness.
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy)
DBT is a type of cognitive therapy that utilizes mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation skills. In summary, these skills help increase self validation, acceptance, and navigate uncomfortable emotions.
