LGBT Therapy
LGBTQIA+ Therapy
LGBTQIA+ stands for: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Pansexual, Transgender, Genderqueer, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Agender, Asexual, and other queer-identifying people.
LGBTQIA+ individuals are at a much higher risk for developing depression, anxiety, trauma/PTSD, and substance use issues. People in this community experience prejudice and other biases that can contribute to mental health difficulties. Furthermore, the questioning and coming out process can be scary and is not just a “one and done” experience. This can lead to lingering feelings of anxiety. Having a therapist know and understand these experiences is important in your therapy.
Queer parenting can include a multitude of complexities from medical prejudices to parental rights issues on top of regular pregnancy/postpartum difficulties. LGBT people face discrimination and micro-aggressions that are isolating and not feeling accepted or understood. It is equally important that mental health difficulties and issues faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals are understood with cultural consideration.
